India Russia relations

From the time of USSR the Russian federation has been seen as one of the most reliable partner of India. But in past few years we have seen a decline in the relations of these nations due to change in the world scenario. But we should first see about the good aspect of the relations.

RELATIONSHIP OF INDIA AND RUSSIA

NUCLEAR RELATIONS 

The strongest bridge between two nations are there nuclear programs. India has received a great aid and assistance from Russia for construction of nuclear power plants and nuclear reactors

Russia has an ongoing agreement of 1988 vintage with India regarding establishing of two 1000 MW reactors (water-cooled water-moderated light water power reactors) at koodankulam in Tamil Nadu .A 2008 agreement caters for provision of an additional four third generation VVER-1200 reactors of capacity 1170 MW each.Russia has assisted in India’s efforts to design a nuclear plant for its Nuclear Submarine. In 2009, the Russians stated that Russia would not agree to curbs on export of sensitive technology to India. A new accord signed in Dec 2009 with Russia gives India freedom to proceed with the closed fuel cycle, which includes mining, preparation of the fuel for use in reactors, and reprocessingof spent fuel

In October 2018, India and Russia signed an agreement to construct 6 nuclear reactors. Russian state-owned reactor manufacturer Rosatom stated that it would offer its third-generation VVER reactors. The agreement is not a firm contract, but rather an agreement to work toward a firm contract

DEFENCE COOPERATION.     

                          

India is one of the biggest importers of Russian weapons. India has atleast 60 percent of it's weapon of Russian origin. Some of the most noticable weapons are INS VIKRAMADITYA (aircraft carrier),INS chakra(nuclear attack submarine), rajput class destroyers, talwar class FRIGATES, sindhugosh class Submarine, a fleet of more than 270 sukhoi 30 mki the main fighter jets of Indian airforce and a fleet of 65 mig-29 upg. We also have hundreds of old mig-21.our army have 2000+ t90 tanks and 2400+ t72 tanks and 2700+ bmp2 IFV. In future India is going to buy more weapons like ship air defence systems tanks submarine etc.

DIMINISHING RELATIONSHIP 

Russia and India have shown their support for each other in various world events but we can also not deny that Russia has got closer to China. They have recently signed a trade deal of worth 400 billion dollars. Russia have shown support to us in conflicts not involving china like in conflicts of Kashmir. Recently Russia have criticise India's step of forming quad with Japan USA and Australia as it effects Chinese interests. Russian have shown friendly gesture towards pakistan which was not a big deal but soon they are going to built a gas pipeline in Pakistan of 1200 km. This is a great setback for Indian interests.

We are also getting threat of USA to impose sanction to us for purchasing s400 defence systems from Russia. Since in past few years our RELATIONS with Western countries have grown which was also not acceptable by Russia.If we don't stop the purchase of s400 DEFENCE system then USA will impose sanction on us which will mean a degrading relationship with Western countries and if we stop the purchase then we will lose our oldest Ally.
